GENERATION 5 – YEDE JANS>DE JONG AND WIJTSKE MENNES MIEDEMA

Yede Jans was born on 20 Jun 1787 in Hoogebeintum, Netherlands. He was christened on 07 Jul 1787 in Hoogebeintum, Netherlands. He died on 24 Jun 1848 in Hoogebeintum, Netherlands. He was also a Boer (Laboureur).

Yede is very important to our family.  He is the one who chose our last name. Prior to this the Dutch only went by a first name and as you can see from prior genertions they went from Iede Jans to Jan Iedes to Yde Jans to Jan Ydes.  This must have been very confusing to say the least.

The Dutch government was completely reformed during Napoleon’s occupation of the Netherlands, which lasted from approximately 1795 untill 1813. On 18 August 1811 Napoleon Bonaparte signed Imperial Decree Number 7178 in the Saint Cloud Palace, of which the first article states that people living in (different parts of) The Netherlands were obliged to pick a last name. This is where the “de” in many of the Dutch names comes from.  “de” is French for the, not Dutch.  I guess it was in recognition that Napoleon made them do this so they put the “de” in many of their names.  Article 5 of this decree also stated that people who already had a last name were obliged to Register that name. Most of our Frisian ancestors had not adopted a last name until then.  After the French occupation the scheme was adopted by the new Dutch King Willem I. As a consequence of this ruling the spelling of family names became completely static. So from then on it happened that even the names of two brothers could suddenly be spelled differently, as most people hadn’t realised how rigid the new administration would turn out to be.

It is Yedes who chose the name de Jong. “The younger” Yedes. He could have chosen Boer (laborer),  or Landbouwer (farmer), or Dikjstra (of the dyke) or countless other names.  But, he chose de Jong which today is the most common name in The Netherland’s phone book.  Who would have thought we would have ended up being “The Smith’s.”  Thank goodness he didn’t chose de Landbouwer!

Yedes married Wijtske Mennes Miedema on 09 Aug 1807 in Hoogebeintum, Netherlands, the daughter of Minne Harmens and Jitske Martinus Lauerman. She was born on 16 Oct 1779 in Genum, Netherlands. She died on 25 Oct 1871 in Hoogebeintum, Netherlands.
