GENERATION 9 – HENDRIK LEWIS DE JONG>DEYOUNG AND E. NEIL WILLIAMS

Hendrik (Henry) DeYoung was the second oldest son of Harry and Ida DeYoung.  After he graduated from high school he went into the army during World War I.

After the service he gtot his education degree at Washington State University.  His first teaching assignment was at Colfax High School.

Taught also taught at Enumclaw, Lewiston Idaho, and Vancouver where he was Principal at Vancouver High School. Henry was active in the Washington Athletic Association where he was appointed Director in 1950.  He served as Director of the Association for many years until he retired.

Henry married E. Neil Williams and they had one daughter Betty who married Donald Cordy. Below is a picture of Henry and Betty.

Henry and his older brother John died five days apart in January 1966.

Obituary Sunday 1.9.1966 Seattle Times. Henry L. DeYoung, 73, retired secretary-treasurer of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, died Friday of a heart attack. One of his brothers, John DeYoung, 75, a retired Woodinville feed and hardware store owner, died last Sunday. Memorial services for him were held Saturday.

Henry L. DeYoung, who lived at 3023 E. Newton St., has made education his lifetime career.  He was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., moved to Kent in 1897, was a graduate of Washington State College (now University) and attended the University of Washington and Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif. After teaching in various schools, he had been principal of high schools in Colfax, Enumclaw, Lewiston, Idaho and Vancouver, Wash., 16 years in the latter community, his last post before the state post.

He was the WIAA secretary-treasurer from 1950 until he retired in 1963 . He was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, the Downtown Kiwanis Club and Theta Chi fraternity.

Survivors: Wife, E. Neil DeYoung; daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Cordy, Davis, Calif.; brother, Ben F. DeYoung, Salt Lake City; sister, Mrs. Glen Stanley, Los Angeles, and two grandchildren.
